Statement nov 09

With this project, I have tried to explore the emerging emptiness projected by some of the poorest neighbourhoods in our city. To do this, I have selected four Dublin areas that were marginalized at some stage during their developmental history, namely, O’Deveny Gardens, Ballymun, Dominick’s street, I was impressed by the striking buildings as these reflected exactly what I was looking for, populated areas that exude emptiness, exteriorly dead buildings filled with many a tale or story within them.

I started to experiment with various photographs I took, however one of these captivated me more than the others, that is the image of a burned out blackened balcony inhabited only by pigeons, windows covered with nailed in wooden planks and the striking geometric shape of the balconies.

Within my experimental thought process and following my interest on the effects of lighting I created three mini versions of the towers using photocopies of those exact Ballymun building images. I lit a candle within each one of these that would represent the life within these structures.

I also created a collage using the balconies in Ballymun as a reference for this creation.
The last experiment I created by setting fire to the face of one of the buildings. To do this I used the same initial striking photograph and started the fire within the balcony area to portray an image of a real fire having taken place.

But I decided that my final piece will be the initial pictures, I think that they show the emptyness that I was looking for and at the same time they have a touch of intimacy.
