Project statement... from here the rest...

Overall I would consider myself to be quite rational thinker in spite of what most people may think. I consider I always need to think things through, I need to understand things, their related mechanisms. Art helps me develop the thought process that helps me achieve this. An example would be when I don’t understand an idea or cannot reach a conclusion, I tend to draw a small map. If I need to know how something works, I open it and analyze every little piece or component that comprises the item or process. However, when I can’t physically see something or can’t understand what is bothering me, I suddenly find myself not knowing what to do with this and find myself falling into this empty space or emptiness that spirals out of control in my mind for several days, months or years. This sometimes worries me.

As a result of this, what I want to do this time is analyze Emptiness as the subject. How people deal with it and what it means to have and deal with this feeling or subject. For example, what do an empty room or empty stomach mean, what does an empty wall mean for artist when confronting it for the first time or when attempting to express himself. If we have an empty room at home, we all know we tend to start filling it with things we find as we don’t know what to do with these things. When having an empty stomach, we also tend to use or eat the first things we see we can eat. Similarly, when we have a feeling of emptiness, we tend to fill and substitute this void with other things that help us cope with this empty feeling. In reality though, we are only fooling ourselves as this void has not been filled and continuous to be an empty space. Similarly, the room I cited as an example continuous to be empty when not filled purposely and an empty stomach filled with anything at all will never feel satisfied.

A blank sheet of paper or canvas can also represent emptiness for an artist or painter. Other examples may be a black hole in space, a soundproof chamber, or silence. With this project, my interest for emptiness lies in highlighting and exploring all impoverished extremities and lost corners of a city and city life that once evolved from a need by the so called proper society to fill what they considered an empty space, an unwanted void. I refer to the need society or government has of covering up forgotten empty spaces represented in this project by unwanted human aspects of impoverished or neglected society with unsubstantiated or artificial components. These societal voids become small microcosms of society.

It is hard for me right now to try and materialize this project but I know I can start by trying to find these impoverished areas within my city. I am still even unsure as to whether this project will result in a process of investigation but it will certainly be interesting to explore the origins of the empty urban locations and the evolution of what filled these spaces over time.
