Subject Matter:
Originally my goal was to make to the ordinary mundane moments of life look extraordinary. However through my studies I realized, it is the simple things of life that make my family happy and hence these moments are what matter to me. I found that when my family are relaxing, with the constraints of life removed, they let their guard down and their behavior expresses their true feelings. It is at these moments that I see their happiness, and how content they are. This sight, in turn, provides me with great contentment, and feelings of achievement and love.
Experiments:
I found that life drawing allows me to capture the intimacy of our relationships, while providing depth to the images. I like using vibrant luxurious passionate colours combined with curvy lines and organic shapes to provide strong composition and form. At present I am using sketching, painting and printmaking to push boundaries, on order to provide the best solution. I have also been experiment with the altering the colours of the drawn images electronically, in order to maximize the impact of the image. This provides further inspiration for the final piece.
Research: As part of my research I looked at the works of Malene Dumas, Toulouse Lautrec and Elizabeth Peyton for inspiration on drawing techniques and the use of colour, and at Gustav Klimt for ideas on the use of form, composition and management of patterns.
Direction: My goal was to take the elements of all of above that inspired me and create my own style. Consequently, this allows me to poetically express the mood and capture how special a moment really is.
